This beach house takes a back seat to the view. "It‘s about the landscape This house forms a piece of it," says architect Simon Swaney, who designed the house with architect Sally Draper. The beach house, of approximately 400 square metres, was designed above a berm (a man-made shallow escarpment) The front gate that normally defines the boundary of a property has been substituted with the berm. Treated as rooms, each external space performs a different role "The deck is the dramatic viewing point. The courtyard is the protected space and the rear is the traditional backyard," says Draper, who was guided by the local climate "It gets quite cold here, which means that even during a cold wind, you can appreciate the views from a number of outdoor spaces." The three-level house, made of glass and steel, features a blackbutt timber facade and a ‘random rubble‘ sandstone chimney. Designed for a family with teenage children, the ground level includes the guest wing, laundry and wine cellar. On the first level, there‘s the main bedroom, ensuite, kitchen and living areas. And on the third level, there‘s the children‘s wing, including a separate television area on the level below. The house is clearly expressed as two forms. One is the public space, defined by the glass and steel pavilion at the front. The other component is an enclosed solid with blackbutt timber-clad walls, into which openings are inserted. The two forms are interlocked with a glass louvred breezeway. "We call it the ‘link‘. The idea was to make as many connections to the outside as possible and to create a variety of experiences from within," says Swaney. The main living pavilion, with a soaring sandstone fireplace, was designed as one large space. With 5-metre-high ceilings and a band of glass windows/doors, the owners have an uninterrupted view of the water. And weather permitting, the doors to the front patio can be pulled right back. As Swaney savs. "The aim is to enipv the views, the.spaces and the bush."
