This 25-floor, 80-metre-high (265-foot) housing tower by Coop Himmelb(l)au accommodates 90 apartments and eight offices, and is by far the most spectacular of the recently built high-rises in Vienna. The glass facades on three sides and the lack of supporting walls mean that the apartments are open and airy and have views in at least two directions. A 350-square-metre (3,766-square-foot) sky lobby on the ninth floor is used as a communal space for recreation by the inhabitants. Significantly, the building was realized with public subventions and thus everybody is eligible for tenancy. Whilst the building is defined as a cubic object when viewed from the north, it appears with a tapering, tilted glass volume seemingly attached when seen from the other side. This form was generated with wind and weather considerations in mind. An interior shaft, the projecting climate-control facade and the roof-top ‘air-box‘ form a sophisticated temperature-control system that considerably reduces energy consumption. Together with the UFA Cinema Centre in Dresden, this high-rise dwelling demonstrates that Coop Himmelb(l)au‘s previous theoretical proclamations and demands indeed can be translated into physical forms. To the largest possible degree, they have dissolved the alleged bases of architecture, including gravity, durability and unequivocal form, creating a thoroughly composed piece of architecture.
