The Koehler House perches on a granite cliff sparsely populated by spruce and pine trees overlooking the Bay of Fundy. It is an unabashedly modernist house, confident and spare in counterbalance to the tremendous drama of the landscape. There are no other landforms or buildings in view. The building has a two-level rectilinear plan aligned along an east-west axis with one edge delicately cantilevered. This strong geometry makes it seem to be simultaneously anchored and floating on the horizon. Glass walls frame views in all directions. They can slide open on pleasant days, or be closed or covered with translucent curtains. The open-plan living and dining area includes a minimal kitchen of two islands, with all cabinets and appliances under the counters so that nothing obstructs the view. The house takes some of its cues from boat design without stooping to literal nautical references. Sliding pocket doors transform transparent bedrooms into private cabins. Everything has a place to be stored. Outdoor spaces present different options for viewing the spectacular landscape: a roofless deck for stargazing, a covered deck shielded from the rain and a screened-in porch for protection from insects. The Koehler House looks light and elegant, and yet is robust; it can be battened down to withstand the high winds and heavy snowfalls that are characteristic of the area.
