Situated in a residential community on a 0.5-hectare (1.5-acre) waterfront site, the Neugebauer House features vistas to the southwest across Doubloon Bay. The house is approached via a winding avenue lined with palm trees, leading to a raised entry that penetrates a wall of limestone. The house‘s linear organization consists of four parallel layers, which are stacked from front to back. At the entrance, a skylit corridor runs the entire length of the house, and a bar module 3.5 metres (12 feet) wide strictly orders the dimensions of all the open communal and closed cellular spaces. The primary areas, including bedrooms and living spaces, are arranged in linear formation, so that each room is provided with a view over the lap pool and the bay beyond. The butterfly roof, an asymmetrical double cantilever supported on the main structural columns, conforms to local building regulations while managing to reinforce the building‘s orientation towards the water. The roof consists of two layers and floats above the main spaces of the house, creating the appearance of an outdoor pavilion from the water.
