This single-family house is located in one of the few remaining undeveloped areas in Southern California at the western end of the Santa Monica mountain range, bounded to the north and west by National Park Service land. In approaching the design of the house, the architects were faced with two challenges: the complex task of developing a full programme for a family house on an environmentally sensitive site, and the client‘s proposal that the two architects construct the entire project themselves. As a result, they spent three years involved in every aspect of the construction. The rocky mountain site provided the opportunity to wrap the house 270 degrees around a granite outcrop to shield the courtyard and interiors from the prevailing northerly wind and rain, and to camouflage the house from hikers in the adjacent National Park. The south-facing butterfly-shaped roof is angled to achieve maximum solar exposure, as well as to collect and channel rainwater to irrigate the site. Concrete exterior walls and honeycombed concrete floor slabs provide enough thermal massing to allow the majority of the interior space to be glazed, taking advantage of spectacular views of the Boney Mountains and Sandstone Peak to the north and east.
