These two neighboring apartment projects indicaie Morgan‘s skill in developing variations of his "tree" concept—opening up and spreading out like limbs from a compact, grounded, trunk-like base—to create spaces of surprising generosity of scale, privacy, and natural lighl, all within densely inhabited volumes. The Victoria Park project employs a 60-foot square module, containing four double-height units which pinwheel around central shared service and bearing walls. Each unit looks primarily in one direction, away from its neighbors and towards a private garden, walled at the ground floor. Clearly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright‘s "Suntop" houses, this basic pinwheel module of four units in turn produces the larger organization of 36 units on die site by linking at the cantilevered second-floor edges to produce a rhythmic stepping chain, with ground-level passage between modules, much as Wright had done in his multi-pinwheel Crystal Heights skyscraper project for Washington, DC. The Neptune Gardens project arranges 30 apartments in a large pinwheel around a square central courtyard. Bedrooms set above carports make a syncopated interlocking rhythm at ihe outer perimeter, and open inward to living and dining rooms that overlook private trellised gardens which pinwheel around the courtyard.
