The design for this 11 2-unii housing complex for moderate- and low-income families creates affordable and memorable public and private spaces that allow lor social interaction and provide privacy, all within the confines of a single housing complex. In stark contrast to the all-loo-familiar uniform housing uiiiis of other similar projects of its (lav. litis project eiieclivelv addressed tin* very real concerns involved in the design and construction of higlnjualiry. personal living space ai affordable The conceptual iiiin was to explore how die built environment could produce a series of spaces, tapering gradually from rhi‘ public arena to [he private dwelling. By totaling an 1 .-.shaped pattern, the built configuration creates gates and archways, forming a non-con tin nous, staggered arcade. This breaks up semi-pithlit internal spaces into smaller areas which lead from the paved city streets to the door of each unit. The two-story row houses are further oriented around five paved court spaces with planters and sandboxes for children.
