This city block of 27 housing units in a residential and office district was built on a brownfield site. Through carefully managed landscaping, biology and sustainability were combined to extract pollutants from the soil. The U-shaped design encloses an island S wetland, part of the vibrant interior court that | acts as a shared social space. The island is divided into an ‘uncultivated‘ landscape of reeds and grasses, and a contrasting timber deck. The facade looking on to the court is enlivened by glazed towers, ranging from two to four floors in height. The living rooms of all the individually-designed units are located in the glazed towers, and the upper levels have a view of the Oresund Sound in the distance. The exterior facade has a super-order grid composed of ribbed precast panels. These horizontal and vertical panels regulate the visual chaos of the I randomly-placed windows and respond to Sthe existing urban fabric. All units are connected by an ‘intelligent wall‘ which J supports mechanical and technical equipment. The roof is covered with grass, restoring oxygen to the atmosphere, and I solar panels that cater amply for the block‘s energy needs. Triple-glazed windows, with transparent argon gas in the outside layer, provide insulation and complete the specification of an environmentally responsible and ecological building.
