Masonic Village at Sewickley is designed to provide a residential setting for the phased development of 228 independent living apartments, 35 independent living cottages, 60 assisted living heds and 128 nursing beds (existing). A wellness center is located centrally and attached to the assisted living building, which includes a children‘s day care facility, a medical clinic, and a swimming pool. A residents‘ clubhouse provides dining rooms, common and activity rooms, a country store, and the main multipurpose room and auditorium. The site design and building placement is intended to evoke the character of a village with the town green as the symbolic and practical center of the community. This is where all of the shared or common buildings are located and where the residents ot the cottages, independent living apartments, assisted living residences, visitors, and staff come together. Major design objectives and responses A unique sense of an established community The planning settled on establishing a large village green in the center of the site upon which all shared fitness and community spaces front. The independent living apartment program was broken down into six buildings of 35-40 units that are all entirely connected to the clubhouse. A quality of architecture rooted in time The Village at Sewickley could not replicate a gothic Versailles-inspired architecture and landscape, but the design responds with a solution that is both at home in the brick vernacular of western Pennsylvania, while being distinctive in the interpretation of English and Arts and Crafts architecture. The ‘craft* aspect of building (a Masonic trademark) is integrated in the exterior and interior architecture as well as the materials and finishes. Programs for seniors in the 21st centurv There are two dining choices tn four differently styled restaurants and wellness/fitness options in a 12,000-square-foot aquatic and exercise center. Intellectual pursuits are met in a library, computer training center, classrooms and large meeting rooms. The site offers walking trails, terraces, and shaded verandas, and it also incorporates a childcare center for intergenerational opportunities and experiences.
