画院建筑群由广东画院和它北侧的广州画院两部分构成，之间以室外架空中庭相衔接，形成统一的入口广场，实现景观相互利用。两个画院虽为一体设计，但却拥有各自独立的入口，功能及流线，互不干扰，可分别施工，单独使用。
设计汲取了中国传统园林要素，加入多层次立体设计，提出立体园林的概念，创造出别具一格的室内与室外空间关系及多层次视觉体验，同时集通风、采光功能为一体，成为整个建筑的点睛之笔。此外，建筑在其他部分为各种不同功能需求分别设计了不同尺度的室内庭院景观，从而在各个微观局部实现自然通风采光。以不同空间相连接，借助大和小的对比，虚和实的对比，直和曲的对比，封闭和开敞的对比，实现传统园林中步移景异的动态空间感受。
建筑地上部分共分为四层，首层周边大面积架空，目的在于使建筑本身和周边广场空间充分融合的同时在夏季提供舒适阴凉的外部空间。两个画院均设有公共流线及内部流线。两个流线既相互联系又相对独立。其中公共流线位于一二层，设大型展厅、报告厅等公共空间，方便观众参观。公共展区环绕室外庭院布置，在参观的同时可欣赏自然景观。三四层为独立创作区。画室在空间排布上遵循传统的密集式布局模式，穿插多处天井和巷道，利用热压和风压组织自然通风，达到自然降温的目的，体现出岭南民居高墙冷巷、广厦连房的传统特色。同时天井和游廊的设计配合小尺度的立体园林景观，营造出有收有放的多层次室内公共空间。每个画室内部均设有独立的通高庭院、冷巷，花园和天窗采光，自然调节的良好微气候以及多层次的自然景观为艺术家最大限度地提供高品质的创作环境。
根据外部光照环境和内部功能需求的不同，同样的立面单元分别采取不同形式的开窗方式。
Guangzhou Painting Academy (not edit yet)
The paintingacademy building complex is located on the north-west area of the culturedistrict; an elevated outdoor garden is linking the GuangdongPainting Academyon the north and Guangzhou Painting Academyon the south. The entrance plaza of the two academies is underneath the elevatedgarden and provides a shaded public space with landscape and acts as anextension of the citizen plaza in the middle. The design aims to achieve sharedlandscape between the two facilities but each still has its own private entranceand circuation flow. As a result of this separation, the academies can beconstructed separately for schedule flexibilities.
The concept of thevertical garden is derived from the traditional Chinese garden. The designtransforms the building into a multilevel 3D landscape system which is possibleto generate different degree of indoor and outdoor spaces. The courtyards togetherwill bring natural daylight and nature ventilation into the buildings.
Each academy hasits own public and private circulations, both flows can be linked or disconnectdepending on the need of the space in use. Considering visitor’s accessibility,the public circulation is mainly located on the ground and 1st floor to servethe nearby exhibition halls and auditorium. The exhibition halls are locatedaround the courtyard spaces so visitors can enjoy both the garden scenery and indoorexhibitions at the same time.
The compact paintingstudios are occupying the 2nd and 3rd floor reflecting the high density layout fromLingnan vernacular. Each studio is surrounded by sky-wells and cool lanes whichare the key elements used in the vernacular approaches. Our traditionalbuilding wisdom is applied so these elements work as natural ventilation deviceswhen air is still or in windy weather. The semi-open corridors become athreshold between inside and outside: courtyards and studios. Each paintingstudio is accompanied with its own courtyard, cool lane and skylight, toachieve a sustainable and comfortable indoor environment for artists and creative
works.
