Guangzhou Museum (notedit yet) The existing GuangzhouMuseum is located in Zhenhai Lou, a well known landmark for its panoramic viewof the city at the foot of Yuexiu Mountain. The design approach is for the newmuseum to inherit the quality and experience of the existing one. From theupwards experience of the existing museum, the design took this localinspiration to create a spiral circulation internally that gradually leadvisitors upwards to the roof terrace for the panoramic view of Baiyun Mountainand the cultural district that surrounds the premise. Another culturalinspiration to the new museum design is the Ying stone which is commonly usedas the main landscape feature in Chinese gardens throughout South East China. Its porosity has influenced the design concept to create a series of innercourtyards that varied in sizes, heights and locations, forming differentindoor and outdoor experiences to accommodate various leisure and exhibitionactivities within the museum itself. The façade treatment is reflecting theirregular voids inside the space with linear cuts and patterns which reinstatesthe quality of Lingnan vernacular into this modern designed complex. The new museum consistsof eight different programmes. The exhibition zone is revolving around thecentre atrium, providing visitors different views of the city whiletraveling up and internal courtyard spaces while coming down. The education andaudience service zones are located closely to the exhibition area foraccessibility while can still maintain independent operations. The business scientificresearch and administrative management zones are giventheir own independent entrances and circulation flows, with two courtyards attachedto the office area for daylight entry, cross ventilation and gardenscenery for staffs. The collection, security custodian andparking zones are design according to the brief requirements. The buildings are elevated from ground floor. This shaded ground floor public space acts as anextension of the museum entrance plaza. This vast shaded area connects to theinternal courtyards to provide cross ventilation for the whole building to suitGuangzhou’s hot and humid weather condition in summer. The façade, generatedfrom the solar radiation analysis of the outer envelope, treats different orientations with different depth of recessions to reduceenergy consumption and building temperature. The façade windows and opening patterns are influenced by the traditional perforated shutter of Lingnan vernacular, symbolic yet functioning well in the local climate.
