Optimizing quality of life for residents and staff motivated the design response for this project. The population includes people with chronic mental illness, mental retardation, dementias, developmental disabilities, and the elderly with medical care needs. It is designed to easily adapt to future changes in resident demographics.
Physical, psychological, and emotional wellheing for residents and staff is central— providing life experiences as similar as possible to life outside the Village. Each resident has a private room with a private toilet, which is part of a household where domestic activities including dining, bathing, and personal laundry occur. Households are grouped into five neighborhoods located around a rown cenrer community space, offering opportunities for shopping, working, learning, and worshipping. A sense of self, as well as a relationship with a greater community is fundamental to wellbeing.
