The 2.N.D House is a 372-square-metre, 4-bedroom residence located on the National Golf Course in Cape Schanck, Victoria, Australia. Contemporary factory-finished materials, including raw precast concrete, anodised aluminium, galvanised steel and glass form the external envelope. The interior of the house has been designed with careful attention to detail. Plasterboard panels float in front of the precast concrete walls, and the solid bamboo flooring and joinery panels result in a continuous play of light and shadow. The colour palette of materials is derived from the local landscape. From its inception, the house was designed with careful consideration of the surrounding rugged environment. The front and rear elevations address the point of arrival by car and the experience of golfers as they meander around the golf course. Upon arrival by car, the house is perceived as a series of monolithic concrete panels rising from the sandy slope. The entry chamber and concrete catwalk that signify the entrance are designed to slice the elements of the surrounding environment, framing a portion of the second hole tee-off, the native tea-trees, the ocean and the sky, presenting a ‘frozen moment‘. From the golf course, the house is perceived as a series of horizontal planes floating amongst the tea-trees, expressing the lineal direction of the golf course ‘drive‘. Capped by galvanised steel channels, the strong horizontal roof and floor plates are intersected by the vertical slice of the concrete entry chamber. The views from the balcony are compressed by the cantilevered roof plates, through the glass balustrades of the balconies, which are designed as ‘transparent barriers‘. There are 18 ‘water exhaust outlets‘ in lieu of downpipes, which allow rainwater to cascade from the roof plates onto rock-covered erosion control pits below.
