This beach house is a 20-mmute drive from the main highway. Isolated from passing traffic, the surf-lined coast is largely only appreciated by the locals. But when architect Stacey Jones of Crawford Architects was returning to the city, he made a slight detour. "He immediately put a 100-dollar deposit on a block of land nestled in the sand dunes," says architect John Crawford, who is a co-director of the practice, and whose family are now joint owners of the beachside property.
The two adjacent sites were also for sale. Purchased by people with a similar aesthetic and respect for the sensitive coastal environment, Crawford Architects were commissioned to design three beach houses (including their own). "It‘s a cliche, but we were all keen ‘to touch the earth lightly,"‘ says Crawford. The three houses, similar in configuration and size, appear to have been scattered on the beach, like driftwood. Clad in western red cedar, which has been allowed to weather naturally, each house has extensive outdoor living spaces framed by 100-year-old wharf timbers. Sliding permeable screens provide privacy when reguired and protection from the salt-laden sea breezes. A shade cloth above the deck eliminates the harsher summer conditions.
The architects were keen to incorporate the clients‘ individual requirements using similar materials and forms. "We wanted them to appear as one cohesive group rather than three houses competing to obtain the best views and light," says Crawford. Each house, of approximately 200 square metres, includes generous living areas (approximately 8 by 8 metres). The Jones/Crawford house (shared by the partners‘ two families) includes a bedroom upstairs and a main bedroom with ensuite on the second level "We wanted to include a third bedroom above the garage in case guests stay over."
Unlike many of the homes in this beach-house community, these houses appear quite raw. "Some of the locals don‘t even consider these ‘proper‘ houses," says Crawford. However, unlike many of the permanent residences, these homes require very little maintenance "The timber has become grey with the weather and there‘s a real affinity with the elements." When the wind picks up, the screens can be manipulated, fully opened or closed- As Crawford says, "When you are designing a house down here, you really need to be conscious of where the weather comes from. But even when it‘s overcast, it‘s still pleasurable being here."
