This three-storey house stands on a suburban hillside with a stream flowing nearby and with a forest as backdrop. Its compositional arrangement draws From the Japanese gardening technique shakkei, borrowed scenery‘. Conceived as having two outlooks, part of the house is open and the other closed. The open part of the house faces south towards the forest, and has an outdoor stepped terrace; and on the first floor is the hall, a multistorey space, a dining room and a tatami room. The green hillside beyond the terrace can be seen from the dining room.
On the ground floor, there is a bedroom facing a sunken court. This is the closed aspect of the house, where the landscape is shut out to allow a more intense experience of nature in the guise of sunlight, wind and rain.
