Designed by the office of Stephen Jolson Architect, this house is located above a golf course. While the course attracts golfers from around the world, so does the area‘s rugged coastline. The 270-degree views over the golf course and surf are sensational, but so is the strength of the prevailing winds. With the inclement climate, it is understandable that the clients were keen on a concrete house. "They wanted a solid home and had always wanted to live in a house totally made of concrete," says architect Stephen Jolson, who designed the house with Adam Muggelton and Bianca Winter. Designed for a couple and their extended family, the 400-square-metre house (excluding garages and terraces) is divided into two wings, separated by a concrete catwalk or drawbridge. On one side of the house are the main bedroom, kitchen and living area The other wing accommodates the other bedrooms (including guests) and the study. "Our clients didn‘t want to feel as if they were occupying a large rambling house if they decided to come down and stay on their own," says Jolson. There are three distinct views of this precast concrete house. From the road, the house appears as a monolith, which has erupted from the ground. The raw exposed concrete follows the curves of the road. But through the front door, the house starts to reveal itself as the first part of a journey. "From the catwalk, the ocean appears to be a calm element. It‘s only when you descend into the living areas that you start to appreciate the full strength of the ocean and the ferocity of the waves," says Jolson Designed over one level (with the exception of the garage), the form of the house is clearly outlined with horizontal floor and roof plates both constructed in galvanised post-form channels. Thick vertical precast concrete panels create a strong juxtaposition in the design. "The house was designed as a viewing platform," says Jolson And while the views are impressive, the architects were also mindful of the ever-changing weather patterns. A large outdoor deck was inserted on the more protected side of the site. For the interior, bamboo was used extensively, from the floors to the joinery. "Bamboo is incredibly strong, there‘s no movement m bamboo and it‘s particularly refined," says Jolson, who also used bamboo to create a datum line across the living room wall. "It mimics the horizon line of the ocean," he adds.
