Once a cottage, this house is now a large weekender. The fibro building, owned by architect Bruce Rickard, was fully surrounded by lantana (a noxious shrub that can grow to considerable heights). "I didn‘t know the property had a view of the water until I climbed an extension ladder against a lemon-scented gum," says Rickard, who decided to take this beach house to the next stage. Instead of building an entirely new house, Rickard built a large deck extending from the original cottage With alterations made to the cottage and the new deck, it was the ideal weekender for many years. When the time came to build the new house, the old cottage and deck became integral to the design. The deck was the foundation for the new living/dimng/kitchen pavilion, which was designed 2.4 metres higher than, and overlooking the existing lower deck. "My idea with the addition was to convert the old house into bedrooms and build a new freestanding pavilion for the kitchen and living areas." And while the two buildings are clearly distinct, the staircase linking the two structures is fully enclosed. Like a tent pitched up in the bush, there‘s a strong sense of the outside from the inside. Rickard used the outdoor timber seating idea from the original deck. Framing the new living spaces, the timber seating can be used for indoor eating or for alfresco dining. The sandstone fireplace in the living area with its timber-lined interior (spotted gum on the walls and brush box on the floors) creates a relaxed feel to the house. "I spent considerable time devising the roof profile, which has a convex-curved ridge and is concave-curved over the eaves. I wanted human-scaled perimeter walls and doors to contrast with the larger-scale pitched space," says Rickard On hot summer evenings, the bush takes on a bluish haze. "When you‘re sitting on the decks, there‘s a wonderful sense of space. The bush appears to go on indefinitely"
