Design/Completion 1981/1983 1001 Crest Lane McLean, Virginia Mr and Mrs P. Wesley Foster, Jr 6,000 square feet Wood frame Painted redwood clapboard siding; painted standing seam metal roof; custom and conventional wood windows; wood floors; dry stone retaining walls Located on a heavily wooded suburban lot just north of Washington along the Potomac River, the Foster House is composed in the manner of a traditional "railroad" plan farmhouse. The long, wood frame dwelling consists of three attached "little houses" that, in the past, would have been built incrementally as a family grew. This massing accommodates the narrow, sloping site and the client‘s request for a two-story house with different, distinct living areas at ground level. The dollhouse-like scale is the result of the purposely overscaled and unadorned windows, dormers and doors. This character is extended within. The top-lit entrance, one half story above grade, serves as a slopping place between upper-story twin bedrooms, lower-story guest area, and the adjoining second little house, which contains formal living and dining areas suffused with natural light. This leads to the dwelling‘s third element containing an informal family room. A porch, overlooking the Potomac River to ihe east, runs (he length ol lliis room.
