From a distance, the House/Studio Arets-Sijstermans building appears to be a rectangular wooden box implanted into the skin of the earth. It is the experience of its immediate surroundings and interior that unveils its complexity. The conv plex nature of the building is achieved through architectural manipulation but within a host of restrictive laws imposed on constructional projects at the site. Its richness is brought into light by the complex arrangement of the terrain and the interior spaces. The term ‘ground floor‘ is abstract in this design since half of the volume is below the ground. In place of the ground level, it is appropriate to use the term ‘garden level‘. Thus, the levels include the top level, the garden level and the-lower level. Not only the is the building vertically divided by the technical spaces into house and studio, but horizontally it is also divided into two equal halves by the street level. The top floor contains the sleeping spaces of the villa and the architects‘ office, the administration space and the meeting hall of the studio. The living, areas and the kitchen of the house, designed to capture the view of the garden, the swimming pool and the terrace, occupy half of the garden level floor. The other half of the garden level contains the office space which is connected to the walled court and the garden by the transparent glass facades, The distinct features of the walled court include its translucent glass brick floor that allows light into the lower level and its openness to fresh air and the surroundings while remaining enclosed. The lower level is entirely utilized bvthej office. It contains the workshop, the archive, the preparation areas and the drawing room lit by sky light through the translucent glass brick floor, it also! contains a children‘s playroom and sauna.
