This large coastal reserve, covered with heath, was once an important transport link for goods. "There‘s still the remains of old marshalling yards,‘‘ says architect Simon Rodngues of Odden Rodngues Architects, who designed this house for his family Originally consisting of two small sites, one 250 square metres, the other 275 square metres, a rudimentary shack built in the 1950s was the only structure on the site. Located only 20 minutes from the centre of town, the coastal site in a premier beach suburb necessitated the development of two houses "The land was expensive, but I didn‘t want the two houses to appear as two separate buildings. I wanted the design to read as one house and appear to be wrapped in the one form," says Rodrigues The two houses both share a similar floor plan and scale. Both houses are designed over three levels, with 90 square meires on each floor. The basement level, which provides for car parking, is also used for the children‘s play area. The first floor includes the kitchen, dining and living areas and the third level of the house accommodates the three bedrooms. Rodngues was keen to create a sense of space in the mam living areas. One of the few intrusions into the space is a concrete column, which acts as a structural support. Even the division between the kitchen and the living area was reduced to the bare minimum, with only structural steel beams supporting the glass shelves in the kitchen. "I wanted the house to feel like a simple container." The materials for the house were deliberately restrained. The brickwork is rendered and a corrugated zmcaium roof has been extended to form the finish on one entire wall Only a few windows punctuate the facade. "The summers can be extremely hot. I didn‘t want to have to rely on airconditionmg to make the house pleasurable to live in," says Rodngues Instead of large glass sliding doors to the patios, the architect chose Alaskan yellow cedar. "I wanted the materials and finishes to respond to the environment. I‘ve used off-whites, greys and straw yellow for the doors. The doors fit into the colouration of the sand dunes," he says.
