This courtyard house was designed to take full advantage of the site‘s views over the Lillebaslt strait. It is organized very simply with a largely open sequence of spaces. The square plan has living spaces at the western side, facing the sun and the views, and bedrooms in two eastern wings. The living room has large windows on two sides, and a terrace. A central courtyard is open to the sky and can be entered from the east under the roof between the bedrooms, where there is a car-parking area, as well as from the house itself. Apart from the courtyard, another important gathering space is the fireplace which cuts vertically into the west facade. The house is constructed from red Flensborg brick, which accentuates the horizontality of the design and provides textural interest on the otherwise plain facades. The terrace, courtyard and parking area are paved in dark Norwegian Otta slate, and the floors are wooden. The roofs slope inwards towards the courtyard, giving an imposing, impregnable, block-like appearance to the outside of the house and a more intimate, human scale to the courtyard. The house is set in an open landscape of wild flowers with only a few houses nearby, and no trees to obstruct the views.
