The Dreieck-triangle-is a trapezoidal city block wedged like a key stone between the Landwehr Kanal and the Tiergarten, Berlin‘s celebrated central park. Its district is an elegant mix of embassies, art galleries, and up-market residential, all buffered from the surrounding city by flowing green spaces. In the eighties, Rob Krier had built the Rauch Strasse-a fine collection of multi-unit "urban villas" embracing a lovely garden court-just around the corner, and it may have served as a model for the Tiergarten Dreieck‘s master plan by Machleit and Stepp. The neighboring Scandinavian Embassy complex is a newer collection of distinguished modern buildings drawn tightly together by an undulating wall of patinated copper. Perforated Urban Blocks The particular pattern of block development that these successful works all share is a variation on the typical Berlin block. Berlin blocks are often large-more than 100 meters square-enclosed by contiguous six-story houses. In the Tiergarten variation the enclosure is broken into separate buildings spaced closely together. The Tiergarten Dreieck‘s plan features 6-meter-wide lanes between small office or residential buildings, leading into a central garden, which serves as an amenity for residents, and is also open to the public during business hours. Collective Character As one of several architects invited to design for this up-scale setting, we were assigned a site for an office building adjacent to the new Mexican Embassy, as well as a portion of a residential court on the Kanal. All the buildings would share a palette of warm sandstone and plaster walls, with metal roofs and wood windows, reinforcing the sense that each building should be seen as part of a larger whole. Most of the design teams agreed on a "second look" architecture-a more quiet character revealing deeper qualities each time it is seen. Exceptions are the Mexican Embassy, a handsome, sculptural work by Teodoro Gonzales Gerardo e Leon, and the Christian Democratic Party Headquarters, which looks like a dry-docked tug boat in a glass box. Sustainable Workplace The small, nearly square footprint of our building site was not optimum for office use in Germany, where daylight and view requirements for offices lead to long, narrow wings. We made the best of the plan by wrapping workplaces around a south-facing atrium. While in design, our office building became the headquarters for the Association of German Savings Banks, who found the atrium useful for exhibitions and gatherings. They also wanted a technologically flexible space, with raised floors and modular partitions, as well as daylight-activated controls for office lighting. Sustainability is much more the standard in Germany, and guided the choices of interior and exterior materials, such as the sedum-covered roof. The second-look design of our office building seems at first to be a typical postwar Berlin scheme of horizontal bands of windows and stone spandrels. Its soul and the viewer‘s reward lie in the careful joinery of its wood, stainless steel, and sandstone facade, animated by an off-center oriel of glass and steel, and a glassy rooftop conference room looking out over the Tiergarten.
