This house has two distinct sides - one side faces the ocean, the other is a relatively suburban street. The only barrier between the ocean and the house is a small local park. Approaching the house from the street (the point of entry), the ocean could be miles away. "The slope of the site is 3 metres. It makes the beach appear even more distant (although the surf can be heard)," says architect Dick Donaldson of Donaldson + Warn Architects, who designed this beach house. The wedge-shaped site, which has an 8-metre frontage to the beach, fans out towards the street behind. Though the beachside is fairly narrow, the owners wanted views from all windows. "The solution was to bring the circulation zone in contact with the views, as well as into the mam living areas," says Donaldson. On the ground level, facing the street is the garage, storage areas, a wine cellar and an office. The first level includes living, dining and a casual living area together with bedrooms for two children. There‘s also a separate play area for the children. On the top level, there‘s the main bedroom and parent‘s retreat. The view to the ocean can be appreciated from the first floor and on the top level, well above the dunes, a large folding door can be pulled right back to reveal the ocean. The bedroom and the retreat then become the one room. The two sides of the house (one to the ocean and one to the street), have been treated quite differently by the architects, particularly in the materials used. To the street, the architects used solid masonry wall, while on the beachside, there is a considerably lighter treatment, with the emphasis on glass, timber, aluminium and steel. "It‘s deliberately lighter towards the beach. It was an appropriate response," says Donaldson. The sound of the ocean draws in those visiting the area, and for the fortunate owners, the ocean views can be appreciated immediately past the front door.
