Known by the locals as the T house, this simple yet extraordinary home, is a landmark m its small beachside settlement. Essentially an 8-by-8-by-8-metre cube, the architect‘s intention was to keep as much of the natural bushland intact as possible. Surrounded by national park, the landscape is relatively unstructured and undisturbed. "Centralising the activity and accommodation into a single ‘box‘ ensures that the site boundaries can remain indistinct as the local vegetation converges on the building," says architect Timothy Hill of the practice Donovan Hill Architects, who designed this house. The design centres on a double-height outdoor room The doors can be closed so that the room can be used throughout the year, rather than only during the warmer months. Instead of solid masonry walls dividing the outdoor room from the bedrooms and living areas, the architects used translucent partitions. The natural light and shadows created by the partitions are quite dramatic, particularly during the summer months The timber house is designed over three levels, with entry from the dune into the house‘s mid-level. The undercroft level is for vehicles, energy services and storage. Entry gates to the living level open directly into the double-height outdoor room. The living level also includes the kitchen and bathroom The upper level provides the main sleeping accommodation. In this house, the architects designed compact built-in bed cubicles that enable the spaces to be used during the daytime ‘We wanted to give the rooms a ‘person-sized‘ appeal and for the owners to have the pleasure of sleeping near the landscape (individual hopper windows were designed at each sleeping platform)" Even m the outdoor room, there are protected nooks for those wanting some solitude. And surrounded by the native bushland. all the elements can be experienced first-hand. As Hill says, "There are no surfaced roads or drainage services. The areas‘ character is largely a product of its ‘undevelopment.‘"
