译者: 艾比 local practice crosson clarke carnachan architects has completed ‘westmere alteration’, a project which forms an extension to a residential property in auckland new zealand. consisting of two stacked rectangular boxes, the upper volume cantilevers in two directions above the lower, which forms a physical connection with the existing house. at ground level a direct relationship is formed with the outdoor environment, while the upper storey offers expansive sea views. clad in dark-stained cedar weatherboards, the elevated box features slatted shutters that give privacy to the scheme’s generous provision of glazing. below, the lower volume comprises fully retractable floor-to-ceiling openings, bringing a sense of outdoor living inside the home. the staircase connecting the two levels is housed within a further box clad in cedar ply. both storeys offer generous open-plan living, while bedrooms are accommodated within the existing property. the dark external cladding of the extension is complimented with warm timber interior linings and furnishings. exposed ceilings complete with herringbone struts create a sculptural element within the living space. throughout the project, a depth of materiality, texture and color is incorporated establishing a degree of transparency and expanse that fully connects and resonates with the context of the site.
