The Pedernal House fuses internal and external space, landscape and architecture. The original house was built by Francisco Artigas in 1955. and was part of the movement which strove to integrate the international style with local settings. When it was remodelled, the aim was to open up an intimate landscape consisting of several different settings and scenarios, all designed to achieve spatial harmony. The principles underlying the project are functionality and purity of form. Behind the tightly closed, street facade a ramp creates a series of routes that connect the interior living spaces with the exterior. The interior facade, which is transparent and highly flexible, enables the internal spaces to be extended towards the visual limits of the site, with the effect that the garden dissolves and merges with them. The house fuses the local volcanic rock with its architecture, using it as a structural and formal element. The materials used in its construction affects the way light is reflected; interior walls are clad with stone and wood in various colours which adds a sumptuous and varied feel to the otherwise minimalist spaces.
