Set within the Wilderveld housing development, the Feyen Residence is an example of a creative solution to a restrictive brief, in this case where the standard plot sizes and building heights were determined by the developer. A more significant constraint, however, was the budget: a house for a family of four with approximately US$80,000 including fees and taxes. Cost considerations suggested a solution with relatively simple structural elements, and the use of inexpensive materials and standardized, industrially-produced components. The 7 by 12.5-metre (23 by 41 -foot) main living area, which contains the kitchen and a home office, is finished on all sides with opalescent polycarbonate sheets illuminated by fluorescent lights, causing the building to glow at night. Natural light was a primary consideration and industrial double-glazed window units let in light from the street side, while prohibiting views out over the uninspiring streetscape. Instead, attention is directed to the fully glazed rear wall of the space, with its views over the terrace and garden. Galvanized sheet-metal stairs lead from the entrance hall to an intermediate landing, from which a gentle slope, also in sheet metal, leads to three bedrooms, a bathroom and a storage area while another staircase leads up to the main living area.
