To look at plans of Anders Wilhelmson‘s EOS housing, one would think him influenced by that most pervasive of Scandinavian influences, Alvar Aalto. The project‘s quasi-organic design, which creates an odd but pleasingly varied landscaped courtyard, and the homogenous curves of the plan all suggest Aalto‘s work. However, examination of the building itself shows that it is clearly from quite another heritage. These terraced houses are faced entirely in profiled aluminium with just one opening at the ground floor for the front door and a large square window. The houses refer less to an organic nature than to a contemporary, light-industrial way of building: cheap and efficient. Inside, the houses are open plan, and all are provided with back gardens. Wilhelmson‘s practice was formed in 1989, and has since carried out an incredibly varied range of work, each, he claims, ‘without historical or formal references of any type‘. This approach has led him to create many varied buildings with a constantly developing palette, in which the EOS housing is yet another chapter.
