The project is situated in an area of Pittsburgh characterized by large homes, long-term family ownership and commitment to community, and a large, diverse, and highly educated predominantly reformed Jewish community. The project rests on an extremely steep site that presented many design challenges to the owner and design team. The site has virtually no street visibility, and was originally part of the property owned by the temple at the top of the site. The site dictated a solution that worked with the hillside, accommodated adequate parking, and would allow for separate buildings for independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and commons. The project was designed to provide residents with a new home in the heart of the Pittsburgh area, by looking to the existing housing forms and materials (stone, siding, and brick) for inspiration.
