Recently, I met an
Italian friend in Korea, and as I had watched Federico
Fellini’s film “La Strada” a few days before, I talked to him about the
film and the main character Zampano, My Italian friend then mentioned the film, “Spring Summer Fall Winter and
Spring,” directed by Kim Ki-duk bombarding me with
questions, “Red crosses everywhere, devil worship?
It’s quite shocking! What do you
think?” “Imported icon, imported religion, but it is the
new Korean religion now. Nobody thinks twice about the red crosses anymore. It
is red neon because it can be seen easily,” I replied chuckling. He also laughed with me. If
one is on a different planet, a deadly poison becomes a
tonic!

Not
only in Seoul but also in my desolate hometown there are many
neon-litred crosses. This is the very nightscape of cities and country towns in Korea. While listening to the “shouting” of the crosses, I think about how much energy
and passion of the religious revival permeates this nation. An overflowing of
the unidentifiable energy and mixed cultures.

I featured this imagery while designing the
fa?ade of a new church with not only red, but also
green, orange, blue colors as well.

An
acquaintance of mine who visited my office saw the model of the church and said, “Wow! It looks like Louis
Vuitton!”

That’s how the church got its unusual
nickname.

I want to witness a miracle. While viewing
paintings by Dali and Magritte, I think of a miracle. I wish to see the images
of miracles in everyday streets.

If technology is mobilized, the cross facades of
churches can also become screens for miracles. I can envision images on the
outer walls of the church that appear in the minds of the
faithful.
