由snohetta事务所设计的SFMOMA扩建方案项目近期举行了动工仪式。扩建部分的面积为21，000平方米，扩大了展厅、图书馆和教室空间，以容纳博物馆日益增长的功能需求。博物馆的扩建方案仍旧关注公共艺术空间的设计，建筑师设计两个户外平台、一座雕塑公园和更加大众化的交通流线，让博物馆朝各个方向开放。自由、共享的首层展厅也将容纳其它各种功能。这座21，000 m2的扩建项目把原有的博物馆展览和教育空间扩大两倍，同时还为当地居民和参观者提供了一个开放的公共区域。

sn?hetta主持建筑师craig dykers介绍该项目时说: “我们设计的SFMOMA适应了基地的特殊需求，同时反应了旧金山的城市地形。建筑的尺度呼应了博物馆的实用功能，公共空间以及与相邻城市环境的设计都加强了SFMOMA与城市的联系。人形道路将活跃博物馆周边的街道，新设计的楼梯和平台将于原有路径、楼梯系统相呼应。”新建筑比mario botta设计的老馆高出15米，屋顶线条与周围建筑天际线相互照应。巨大的玻璃幕墙成为首层空间与街道相交的接口，让户外的行人可以看到内部的艺术展览和新公共空间。一个宽阔、开放的行人散步道嵌入到建筑中，从howard街一直通往natoma街，期间穿插了一系列楼梯和平台，成为另一个活跃的公共空间。

the groundbreaking ceremony will be broadcast via live webcam today， may 29， 2013 at 10am PDT on the SFMOMA website.The internationally renowned studio sn?hetta has unveiled new images of the san francisco museum of modern art (SFMOMA). the 21，000 m2 expansion will double the museum's exhibition and education space in addition to providing an open and inviting public realm for the bay area residents and visitors. on the design， sn?hetta principal architect craig dykers: 'our design for SFMOMA responds to the unique demands of this site， as well as the physical and urban terrain of san francisco. the scale of the buildingmeets the museum's mission， and our approach to the neighbourhood strengthens SFMOMA's engagement with the city. pedestrian routes will enliven the streets surrounding the museum and create a processionof stairs and platforms leading up to the new building， echoing the network of paths， stairways，and terracing that is a trademark of the city.'
standing 15 meter higher than the mario botta building， the roofline will be sculpted to frame the skyline of the surrounding buildings. large planes of glazing will serve as an open interface on the street level， lending views of both the exhibited art and the new public spaces within.the insertion of a wide， open-air pedestrian promenade running from howard street through to natoma street will feature a series of stairs and landing terraces， providing additional public space.
