| Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center |

Kengo Kuma's Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center in Tokyo is a versatile 8-story building designed for different uses. It serves as a tourist information center, a conference center, and a multi-purpose hall and exhibition space all-in-one. Its layered plan resembles a stack of small apartments with sloping roofs, all wrapped up with wooden louvers that filter natural light. Kengo Kuma′s Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center is located on a busy corner in Tokyo near the ancient Buddhist temple Sensō-ji. It’s made mainly from glass and wood, and its interiors are airy and bright. The building benefits from lots of natural light, and excess sunshine is filtered by vertical wooden louvres that wrap the building′s eight stories. The sloping 6th floor is dedicated to a theater, and the terrace offers visitors a breezy space for relaxation with great views into the city. But one of the architect′s smartest solutions is the use of the “dead” spaces between the sloping stories for storage of equipment. |
