Ennead architects have been shortlisted in the competition to reimagine a hurricane-sandy ravaged area in new york. in consideration of the eventual rise of the ocean and innundation of the sea in Rockway， new york， ennead has designed a multi level community to accommodate future flooding in their proposal 'for a resilient rockway' (FAR ROC). several berms raise the ground level and provided added protection for the mounds beyond; an infrastructural land-forming idea that protects the area against rising sea levels.
To reduce the quantity of fill necessary， the earth is rounded in section， forming a sine wave across the parcel. the design additionally incorporates relief channels so as to optimize drainage in the wake of natural disaster. upon flooding， islands are formed. they are connected by elevated roadways， which includes the central axis that serves as a commercial street under typical circumstances， and during an emergency as an egress road.
