Zeitgeist
Zeitgeist

A mid-century ranch house Belmont, California -- just south of San
Francisco -- recently underwent a significant renovation leaving it far more
energy efficient than before. Designed by Zeitgeist Design, the home was
expanded to add more entertainment space and maximize on the views of the bay.
Clad in low-maintenance zinc panels, the Kumar Residence features a tight and
heavily insulated envelope with high performance windows that provide a high
level of daylighting inside.
The original home was built in the 1950s, but
was in need of some updating to make it work better for the new owners. It was
expanded to include more entertaining space with a loft-like living space and
improved views of the area. The 3,000-square-foot house has 4 bedrooms and 3 ½
baths and revamped front and backyard landscape. Sliding glass walls expand the
interior out into the yard to take advantage of the moderate
climate.
Zeitgeist was utilized Passive House design standards in the remodel
of this home and while the home is not certified, it does feature a high level
of insulation and air tightness. Spray foam insulation, high thermal mass and
high performance window units from German manufacturer Zola and heat recovery
ventilation, contribute to the home’s overall tight envelope. In addition, the
home features a high level of daylight penetration and enjoys natural
ventilation during more temperate months. There is no need for an air
conditioning system and the owners were sold on the concept of lower electric
bills with the help of a passive house-inspired design. |
