| Regenerating an isolated site in kuopio, Finland with an interconnected master plan, Spanish studio ooiio architecture has been awarded second prize for the European competition. The proposed housing development is positioned above existing railway tracks, recycling what is currently a dangerous and wasted space. The creation of a pedestrian bridge directly over the transport line seeks to transform the whole area, producing a variety of dense public facilities, including an outdoor park. The geometry of the buildings is based on diverse cultural references and transport icons such as cranes found in ports and train stations, as well as graffiti and artistically constructed text. The form of the volumes is further influenced by environmental principles and a rational and efficient housing distribution, offering a distinct commercial street along the spine of the bridge. The strategy of building over the railway helps to foster interactions between inhabitants, rethinking a way for separate city zones to coexist together again. |
